I'm Michael Gordon — MG — a songwriter, musician and producer helping people turn musical ideas into confident, finished recordings.
Making music feel possible
I built The Red Room around a simple belief: you should not need a huge budget, intimidating technical knowledge or a major commercial studio to make music that feels exciting and complete.
Songwriting sits at the heart of my work. I help develop hooks, melody, lyrics, structure and arrangement, then use recording and production to make the strongest parts of the song land properly.
I work with complete beginners, home recordists and musicians who want practical, collaborative help. Sessions can take place in my private studio in the Scottish Borders or online worldwide. The exact studio location is shared privately with confirmed clients.

1991 · Ain’t No Saint
It started with a handmade ticket.
On 13 May 1991, Michael Gordon’s first band, Ain’t No Saint, played Calton Studios in Edinburgh at Kurd Aid — a benefit concert Michael organised for the Red Cross appeal.
The ticket cost £1.50. The bill also included Taza and The Matter Babies. It was an early lesson in the whole job: write the songs, bring people together, make the show happen.
1998–2001 · Imperial Racing Club
Records, radio and the Scottish circuit.
Imperial Racing Club began with Michael Gordon, Doug Johnstone, Darren Robertson and Nord Idessane. Craig Costello later took over on bass; Chris McArthur subsequently joined on drums.
Among IRC’s releases was the What Every Woman Wants EP. Elsewhere in the band’s catalogue, Big Day Out was played repeatedly by John Peel on BBC Radio 1. The band went on to T-Break and T in the Park, Glasgow Green and support slots around Scotland.
Line-up notes
The surviving archive documents several phases of IRC. Exact transition dates between Craig Costello replacing Darren Robertson on bass and Chris McArthur replacing Doug Johnstone on drums are left open where the material does not establish them.

Hogmanay at Commercial Quay
IRC closed this chapter at the Edinburgh Hogmanay event alongside Toploader, Shed Seven and Gods of Glam, with Gail Porter introducing the band. An original all-areas pass remains in the archive.
2010–11 · IRC returns
Another line-up. The same instinct.
A later Imperial Racing Club line-up brought together Michael Gordon, Craig Costello, Davy Rosie, Chris McArthur and Ross Easton. The band appeared at Haddow Fest and released Eighteen Tonne.
By 2011, the focus was beginning to move toward Michael’s own independent records — first as an experiment, then, after returning from Singapore, as a sustained creative run.
2011–2026 · Mg
The albums become the timeline.
Life and Pale Blue Dot tested the water after IRC. The major restart came in 2021, after Michael moved back to the UK from Singapore. From there, the gaps between records disappeared.
